A letter from HEB to SRCC:
We have exciting news for our South Congress and Oltorf neighbors. After more than 60 years of serving this community, H-E-B is now taking steps to make major improvements and changes to our longest-standing grocery store in the city, located at 2400 South Congress Avenue. We are thrilled to share that your H-E-B will become the most innovative store in the entire company! We’re reimagining your H-E-B, transforming it into a unique destination with influences from across the world and a vibe that’s purely South Austin.
We are still very early in the design and permitting process, which is expected to last until mid- to late-2020. We have a full year of planning still ahead of us, and we’re excited to use that time to listen to you, our community members, and gain your valuable feedback on how the new store can best serve you. Once we have final, approved plans, we’ll move into the construction phase which is anticipated to take two years to complete. As a neighborhood leader we wanted you to hear about it from us first, and please feel free to share this information with your neighbors.
One thing we can say without a doubt is this H-E-B is being designed to best serve the needs of your neighborhood. Sixty-five years after first opening our doors on South Congress, you can expect to see a larger, more creative, world-class grocery store, with new features and innovations to make it a community gathering place, like an eclectic food hall with indoor and outdoor dining spaces and H-E-B’s first-ever beer garden. And, we are planning to have two levels of underground parking.
As you probably know, we purchased the adjacent Twin Oaks Shopping Center in 2016. We are razing and rebuilding the store in its current location instead of moving it to Twin Oaks. After years of study, this was determined to be the best approach in terms of mobility, which, along with providing a wide variety of fresh foods and products at everyday low prices, is one of our top priorities for our customers.
We are at least a year away from even beginning construction, and the store will remain open and fully operational until then. We will open a temporary store located at the adjacent Twin Oaks Shopping Center to serve customers through construction and we are already putting detailed plans in place to ensure our shoppers will still have the best shopping experience possible. We’ll also make sure you have multiple convenient shopping solutions during this period, and we will do everything we can to create the least amount of disruption.
We want to hear input from the neighborhoods we serve about what they want to see in their store before any type of construction begins. We will be actively reaching out to neighborhood groups to attend upcoming community meetings to share updates.
If you have any questions or feedback, or want to stay updated on the process, go to HEB.com/SouthCongress. You can also contact our Customer Relations team 24/7 at customer.relations@heb.com or call 1 (800) 432-3113.
We look forward to talking with our neighbors more in-depth over the coming weeks and months to get your insight on what you’d like to see in your H-E-B.
